Woodwork

Working with wood for over the
last forty years, Malcolm Manifold's affinity with its beauty and
versatility is second nature. Although he studied timber technology
at college in Liverpool, his ability to create stunning pieces in
his medium goes far beyond what can be formally taught.
|
His knowledge of the properties
of wood in general, and the characteristics of particular species
gives him the confidence to experiment with new ideas and techniques
and to take on challenges which many would shirk. Such are his connections
in the timber trade, he is well-known for his ability to locate
particular materials for clients' requirements anywhere in the UK,
and even abroad. Unable to resist the attraction of rare or especially
beautiful timbers, he usually has in his possession a few 'gems',
bought on speculation that they will be needed.

Using his innate skill at
working with wood, Malcolm designs and makes functional items
and free-form sculptures. He favors simplicity of design over
elaborateness and a particular trade-mark is the tactile nature
of his work, especially his sculptures. Over the years he
has produced some remarkable pieces for churches, stately
homes and boardrooms as well as for discerning private individuals.
